Compassionate Activism Workshop -- How to Be an Effective & Respectful Activist

Compassionate Activism Class - Wednesday, March 22, 6:30-8:30pm, Little Italy San Diego

In the past few months, but particularly in the past 5 weeks, I've seen a lot of people who have suddenly found themselves engaging in activist activities. While I engaged in some activism in college and graduate school, I've been getting more involved in the past few years, such as marching to speak out against CA Prop 8's ban on same sex marriage and a vigil and march after the horrific death of Eric Garner. But the Women's March on Washington, and the subsequent White House actions against human topics that I care the most about, such as access to good education, protecting the environment, the rights and protection of economically vulnerable populations in the US, and access to health care and reproductive health services, have brought activism to a new head for me personally and professionally, as a sociologist and sex educator.

So I'm really excited and proud to be teaching a class on Compassionate Activism with one of the leaders in the compassion movement, Sara Schairer, founder of the Compassion It nonprofit. What is compassionate activism? We'll be creating a safe space to talk about and experience:

  • What is compassion

  • What is individually stressing each of us

  • What emotions and beliefs are involved

  • Different kinds of activism and the power of each

  • How to have compassion for others and why it's valuable

  • How to have compassion for ourselves and prioritize self-nurturing

  • Steps to create a compassionate plan of action.

If you live in San Diego, and this topic matters to you, please consider joining this class. We ask for a suggested $5 donation towards the Compassion It nonprofit. Register here for Compassionate Activism
