#WhyIMarch - Women's March on Washington

I'm in Washington, DC, and I just finished making my march signs while all my east coast friends here are already asleep. While it feels like a no-brainer for me, since I'm in the sex & gender field and have previously been involved with activism, to be here for this women's march, I've been reflecting on the various reasons why this march matters to me.

Why is there a Birth Control Debate?

It's mind-boggling the way that some American leaders and politicians view female sexuality. I think this cartoon summarizes the contradictions and foolishness of the debate pretty well. Why do we need to keep reminding people that sex is a normal, natural, healthy part of human expression and existence?

Dear Mike Huckabee -A Woman's Response

I don't know about you, but sometimes I get so irritated about the ridiculous comments some politicians spew about women's sexuality, contraception, etc., that I have to do something to speak out against it. It's not OK that they are so out of touch with what it's like to be in a female body, or that they speak with distain about women as sexual beings. This takes our country backwards. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee recently made some "pro-woman" comments that were offensive and outright ignorant. Here's my video letter in response to him.

Sex Issues in Voting

There are so many sexuality-related topics relevant to this November's election, such as marriage equality (i.e., gay marriage), reproductive rights (i.e., abortion), comprehensive sex education, health insurance, HIV/AIDS prevention.

Are the rights around these topics important to you? If yes, please make sure you are registered to vote. Depending on your location in the country, the deadline to register may have passed, but some areas are still open. I think this YouTube video called "5 Friends Vote" by a bunch of Hollywood stars is a poignant and cleverly entertaining way to encourage folks to register to vote, and give them the online link to find out how!
